Wilmington Council won’t open meetings with prayer

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) – The Wilmington City Council is ending its practice of opening meetings with prayer.

The News-Journal reports (http://delonline.us/2iXQ4V9 ) that the invocation has been replaced on the council agenda by a “silent reflection.”

City Council President Hanifa Shabazz sponsored legislation with the new council rules approved Jan. 3. Shabazz, who is Muslim, says the prayer didn’t offend her, but she felt a silent reflection better served the city’s diverse population.

Religion still plays a role in some city government traditions. The mayor, city treasurer and council members took their oaths with hands on Bibles earlier this month, and a preacher spoke at their inauguration.
