Tom Carper dismisses reference to ex-wife slapping incident as ‘political mischief’

DOVER, Del. — Democratic U.S. Sen. Tom Carper is criticizing Republican attempts to dredge up a decades-old incident in which he slapped his ex-wife, leaving her with a black eye.

During a debate Wednesday, Carper and Republican challenger Rob Arlett were asked whether President Donald Trump should be held to the same standard as other public figures who have been accused of sexual misconduct.

After both candidates said no one was above the law, Arlett noted that October was National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and brought up the slapping incident, leading to an angry retort from Carper.

Carper admitted making a mistake but denied trying to cover up the incident and said GOP attempts to create “political mischief” for him have not worked in the past and will not work this year either.
