‘This is Our New York’ initiative presents city’s diversity

NEW YORK (AP) – At least 700 New Yorkers fighting for immigrants’ rights went to Washington for a rally in a church where their cause was compared to Martin Luther King’s civil rights battles.

During Saturday’s celebration of the upcoming holiday on Monday, activists on New York streets signed up hundreds of volunteers to support the same cause.

Members of the New York Immigration Coalition asked people to sum up their personal stories for signs labeled “Our New York is.” They were then photographed for posts on social media as part of the new “This is Our New York” initiative.

Teams also fanned out to Hempstead, on Long Island, and Mamaroneck, north of New York.

In Washington, thousands filled the Metropolitan AME Church to make clear their opposition to president-elect Donald Trump’s immigration policies.
