Sonia Sotomayor on election: ‘We can’t afford to despair’

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor said Tuesday that Americans “can’t afford to despair” over Donald Trump’s presidential victory.

Justice Sotomayor spoke cautiously about the election when asked by radio host Bill Press at the Hill Center in Washington, D.C., whether the results made her feel “apprehensive.”

“We can’t afford for a president to fail,” the liberal justice told the crowd, The Washington Post reported. “It is true for those who tell us that we have to support that which he does which is right, and help guide him to those right decisions, whichever way we can want to do that.

“But we can’t afford to despair, and we can’t afford to give up our pursuing of values that we and others have fought so hard to achieve,” she said. “And so for me, this is a challenge. So I’m going to continue doing what I think is the right thing. That’s the challenge we all have to face.”

Justice Sotomayor, the first of President Obama’s two appointees to the high court, didn’t mention Mr. Trump’s name during her remarks, The Post reported.
