Sheriff’s posses temporarily suspended in Maricopa County

PHOENIX (AP) – Maricopa County sheriff’s posses involved in law enforcement operations have been temporarily suspended as Sheriff Paul Penzone’s office inventories all weapons used by the agency.

Penzone says inventories are necessary because 50 firearms, including 29 fully automatic guns, are missing or stolen from the sheriff’s office.

Two such guns were found in the aftermath of a police chase late year in which a man fired at state troopers.

Penzone says Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s administration was lax in monitoring firearms and was politically motivated when pushing to increase the number of armed posse members.

Four of 235 posse volunteers who were allowed to carry guns fulfilled all requirements for possessing firearms while on duty.

They’ll be given a chance to fulfill the obligations.
