Sen. Warren urges Trump to dump Sessions as attorney general

BOSTON (AP) – U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren is urging President-elect Donald Trump to reverse his decision to tap Sen. Jeff Sessions to serve as attorney general.

Warren said by choosing the Alabama Republican, Trump is embracing the bigotry that fueled his campaign rallies instead of distancing himself from it.

The Massachusetts Democrat said Friday that if Trump sticks with Sessions, it will be up to the Senate to “exercise fundamental moral leadership” for the country.

She said 30 years ago a different Republican-led Senate rejected Sessions’ nomination to a federal judgeship.

During that hearing, Sessions was criticized for joking that the Ku Klux Klan was “OK” until he learned they smoked marijuana.

Massachusetts Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey also said she hopes Sessions is rejected, calling his past comments “cause for serious alarm.”
