Obama to meet with special forces and give speech on counterterrorism efforts

President Obama will meet with U.S. special-operations forces in Florida Tuesday and give a speech summarizing his administration’s fight against terrorists, the White House said Thursday.

The president’s visit to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa will be his “final opportunity” to discuss with Americans how he has “effectively, durably and successfully implemented reforms to keep us safe,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest.

The visit also will provide Mr. Obama with an opportunity to spell out how U.S. counterterrorism efforts should go forward as President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office.

MacDill is home to the U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, which have been at the forefront of missions targeting Islamist extremists in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere. The president will meet with leadership of both commands and with troops, including special-operations forces.
