Mayor: Newark won’t change its policies regarding immigrants

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – The mayor of New Jersey’s largest city says the election of Donald Trump won’t change the way it treats residents who are living in the country illegally.

Ras Baraka, a Democrat, said Monday that the city plans to continue its policy of arresting only those who engage in criminal activities.

Trump talked tough about immigration on the campaign trail. But the Republican later distanced himself from those statements and, in an interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes” broadcast Sunday night, said he would focus on deporting people with criminal records beyond their immigration status.

Newark last year established a municipal identification card program for most city residents, including those living in the country illegally. The cards provide access to vital city services, and nearly 10,000 have been issued so far.
