Maine House Democrats ready to pick new leader

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) – Democrats are going to nominate the next speaker of the Maine House of Representatives.

The House Democratic Caucus will gather at 10 a.m. Friday to nominate candidates for speaker. Legislators will formally vote for House speaker in December.

Democratic Reps. Gay Grant and Sara Gideon, who served as assistant House majority leader, are running for speaker.

Outgoing House Speaker Mark Eves’ tenure has been marked by face-offs with GOP Gov. Paul LePage, whom Eves has unsuccessfully pushed to impeach.

A federal judge dismissed Eves’ lawsuit accusing LePage of using threats to withhold state funding to force a charter school operator to rescind a job offer to Eves. Eves is appealing that decision, which found LePage’s actions constituted protected political speech.

This summer, Eves traveled around Maine listening to elderly citizens.
