Laurence Tribe, Harvard Law professor, deletes Donald Trump-Adolf Hitler comparison tweet

A Harvard Law School professor has taken down a tweet in which he compared President Trump and Adolf Hitler while insisting he wasn’t comparing Mr. Trump and the Nazi German dictator.

Laurence Tribe retweeted Monday a comparison of Mr. Trump and Hitler engaging in similar physical gestures and calling it “horrifying” before calling the similarities both irrelevant and not irrelevant.

“I’m not saying Trump is becoming Hitler, so don’t bother tweeting the distinctions,” Mr. Tribe wrote.

“But the physical and behavioral resemblances aren’t altogether irrelevant. No prior president even suggests the comparison,” he added.

Mediaite reported on the comparison Tuesday afternoon, and by Tuesday evening the tweet was gone from Mr. Tribe’s feed without explanation. Mediaite had made a screen grab of the tweet “(in case it is taken down).”

“Should critics of a political figure who reflexively evoke Hitler be considered losers? The answer? Absolutely,” Mediaite wrote.

Mr. Tribe has taught a Harvard class on impeaching Mr. Trump. Last year, he apologized for a comment on impeachment that “If you’re going to shoot him, you have to shoot to kill,” while claiming he was speaking metaphorically and riffing off the familiar Ralph Waldo Emerson quote about coming after the king.
