Immigration officials targeting suspect in Worcester killing

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) – Immigration officials say a man charged with killing a teacher’s aide in Worcester earlier this year is the subject of a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detainer.

The Telegram & Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/2nfG3Wp ) 54-year-old Jose Melendez is being held in connection with the February slaying of 49-year-old Sandra Hehir and is now facing possible deportation.

Melendez was charged after police say investigators matched DNA from the scene of the crime to DNA from an unsolved 2000 rape in which he was a suspect.

An ICE detainer is a request for local law enforcement to hold a person who may be in the country illegally so they can be taken into custody by federal immigrant officials.

An ICE official said detainers aren’t used on people the agency believes cannot be deported.
