Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump but race close in final stretch: polls

New national polls released Sunday showed Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump as the race tightened two days before Election Day.

The final NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll before the election gave Democratic nominee Mrs. Clinton topping Republican Mr. Trump by 4 percentage points, 44 percent to 40 percent.

Mrs. Clinton had an 11-point lead in the same poll in mid-October, 48 percent to 37 percent.

An ABC News/Washington Post poll gave Mrs. Clinton a 5-percentage point advantage over Mr. Trump, 48 percent to 43 percent.

However, Mr. Trump held a 1-point lead over Mrs. Clinton, 44 percent to 43 percent, in an Investor’s Business Daily/TechnoMetrica Market Intelligence poll, which has ben the most accurate poll in recent presidential elections.

The race for the White House will be decide in battleground states, and the race is neck-and-neck in most of those states. The national polls, however, help identify trends in the electorate. The latest polls confirm the race is getting closer.

The Real Clear Politics average of recent national polls that includes the NBC, ABC and IBD surveys showed Mrs. Clinton with a lead of 2.2 percentage points over Mr. Trump, 44.9 percent to 42.7 percent, in a four-way race that included Libertarian nominee Gay Johnson at 4.8 percent and Green Party nominee Jill Stein at 1.8 percent.
