Herbert: US government needs to enforce immigration laws

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Gov. Gary Herbert says Utah law enforcement may help federal immigration officers but it’s the U.S. government’s job to enforce immigration laws.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said this week that President Donald Trump’s administration is going to strip federal grant money from sanctuary states and cities where local police refuse to enforce federal immigration laws.

Herbert said at a news conference Friday that Utah will “engage” with immigration officials but it’s unclear exactly what the administration wants from local law enforcement.

The Republican governor says there’s too much focus on Trump’s plan for a border wall with Mexico. He says the country needs to make it easier for foreign workers to come to the U.S. legally and should crack down on businesses breaking the law by hiring workers who are in the country illegally.
