Hassan, Shaheen to visit Planned Parenthood

EXETER, N.H. (AP) – Democratic U.S. Sens. Maggie Hassan and Jeanne Shaheen are planning a visit to Planned Parenthood to speak about the importance of funding the health care organization.

The two New Hampshire senators will be at the clinic in Exeter early Monday. They’ll discuss their efforts to retain federal dollars for Planned Parenthood despite Republicans’ opposition. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan says cutting off taxpayer money to the organization will be a part of upcoming legislation to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Planned Parenthood provides abortion and women’s health care services. New Hampshire has five Planned Parenthood clinics.

New Hampshire’s Executive Council temporarily shut off state funding to the organization in 2015. Republican Gov. Chris Sununu, a former councilor, has voted both to cut off and to restore state money.
