Find Your Millennial City

About the data

Our rankings compared cities with populations greater than 200,000 and used five-year data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey, spanning from 2012 to 2016. We focused on five key areas in crafting our millennial index — the percentage of millennials in a particular place, a city’s economic output, education levels, alternative forms of transportation, and the percentage of millennials (adults aged 25-34) who had moved recently from other areas.

We then weighted these factors as follows:

  • 32 percent of the ranking is based on the percentage of millenials who live in the city.
  • Another 32 percent is based on the per capita gross domestic product, a measure of economic output that indicates the strength of the local economy.

The remaining 36 percent is divided equally among three other factors:

  • The percentage of millennials with college degrees.
  • The percentage of millennials using alternative commuting methods like walking or public transportation.
  • The percentage of millennials who reported moving into a city during the previous 12 months — which we used as an indicator of the city’s attractiveness to young people.

Beyond the Pew rankings, we’ve added five additional factors to help you find your perfect millennial city. We did this to give you more choice in deciding which cities are attractive to you. The other factors are:

  • Median income (where the head of household is a millennial) .
  • Housing affordability, or the percentage of households that pay 35 percent or more in rent or homeowner costs and have a head of household that is a millennial.
  • Diversity, or the average percentage of a city’s population that isn’t white (data from 2012 to 2016).
  • Median age of a city’s population (2016).
  • Job growth in a city’s metro area as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (data from 2012 to 2016)
