Feds arrest 3 advocates for Vermont immigrant farm workers

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) – Vermont Attorney General T.J. Donovan says federal authorities had the legal authority to arrest three advocates for the state’s immigrant farm workers.

One immigrant was arrested last Wednesday during a targeted vehicle stop. Immigration and Customs Enforcement says he acknowledged entering the country illegally and is facing deportation to Mexico. The charges against the two arrested Friday are unclear.

Will Lambek of the group Migrant Justice says the three members of the organization were targeted because of their activities on behalf of farm workers.

Donovan, a Democrat, says the rhetoric from the federal government has been about arresting people with violent criminal histories. He says immigrant workers are a critical part of Vermont’s dairy industry. Many do not have legal status.

ICE didn’t return calls and emails Monday seeking comment.
