Ex-lawmaker arraigned, governor seeks to combat corruption

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – As a former Rhode Island state lawmaker is arraigned on fraud charges, the governor says she’s looking for new ways to combat corruption.

Democrat Ray Gallison was charged in federal court with mail fraud, wire fraud, aggravated identity theft and filing false tax returns.

Gallison, an attorney, acknowledges taking money from a dead man’s estate.

He also acknowledges taking money from a nonprofit funded by state grants, though he never did any work for it.

Gallison was arraigned Friday and released on personal recognizance. He has agreed to plead guilty.

He’s the third former state representative charged with criminal conduct this month.

Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo says she’s frustrated. She said Friday she’s considering actions the state could take, including tighter campaign finance laws or better auditing.
