Ex-ICE agent convicted in immigration bribery scheme

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) – A former Immigrations and Customs Enforcement officer involved in an immigration scheme has been found guilty.

NJ.com reports (http://bit.ly/2lJIxji ) that 39-year-old Arnaldo Echevarria, of Somerset, was found guilty of multiple counts of bribery, making false statements and harboring an undocumented immigrant.

Prosecutors say Echevarria received $ 75,000 in bribes from immigrants in exchange for employment authorization documents from 2012 to 2014. Officials say Echevarria also accepted sexual favors in one instance.

Prosecutors say Echevarria hid his girlfriend’s immigration status, signed documents for her apartment and employed her in his hair salon while lying to ICE officials. Officials also say Echevarria paid his girlfriend and other employees in cash to avoid employee paperwork.

Echevarria faces up to 15 years and fines. Sentencing is scheduled for June 19.
