Donald Trump: Situation with my business ‘going to work out very easily’

President-elect Donald Trump said Wednesday that stepping away from his business empire is much less complicated than the press is making it, and that the people who elected him knew about the scope of the business going into the election anyway.

“That’s very routine, honestly — it’s a very routine thing,” he told reporters. “It’s not a big deal. You people are making that a big deal, the business.”

Mr. Trump said he’d be having a press conference in early January. He postponed one that had been scheduled for Dec. 15 in which he was supposed to talk how he planned to separate himself from his hotel and golf course empire before being sworn into office.

“It’s a much bigger business than anybody thought. It’s a great business, but I’m going to have nothing to do with it,” he said Wednesday.

“I don’t have to because as you know, I wouldn’t have to do that by law, but I want to do that because I want to focus on the country,” Mr. Trump said.

“But when I ran, people know I have a very big business,” he said. “They elected me, I guess, partially for that reason. So I think that’s going to work out very easily. It’s actually a very simple situation. It’s not a big deal.”

Scholars are debating whether the Emoluments Clause in the U.S. Constitution, which bans elected officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments, would still pose issues for Mr. Trump even if he separates himself from his business, since he has announced plans to turn things over to his adult sons.

Mr. Trump was flanked by legendary boxing promoter Don King as he answered several questions from reporters. He’s holding meetings this week at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.
