Broadcaster demands Australia police drop probe of reporters

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) – An Australian broadcaster has asked the government to drop a police investigation of two reporters who published leaked classified documents two years ago.

Australian Broadcasting Corp. Managing Director David Anderson says he had written to Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton calling for police to drop their investigation of two ABC reporters.

Dutton’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday.

Government assurances that public sector leakers rather than journalists are the targets of raids on the ABC and News Corp. last month have come under question as new details have emerged of police efforts to track one reporter’s movements and to discover who reporters talk to by phone.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese has supported the ABC’s call for the investigation to end.
