Bill Bar, Trump Attorney General nominee, backed by Justice Department alums

More than 120 former Justice Department officials have signed onto a letter expressing support for Attorney General nominee William Barr ahead of his confirmation hearing next week.

The letter is signed by three former attorneys general, two former FBI directors, and a former DEA director. More than 70 former U.S. attorneys also signed the letter.

“Bill’s career reveals a character of unwavering commitment to the rule of law without regard to favor or politics,” the officials wrote in the letter.

The letter highlights Mr. Barr’s career achievements, including prosecuting those responsible for the Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s; and working with then-Assistant Attorney General and current special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate the bombing of Pan Am flight 103.

“It is his patriotism and respect for the institution that brings Bill Barr back before you,” the letter said. “We urge you in the strongest manner possible to confirm him to the job he is uniquely qualified to perform again.”

Among the notable names on the list are former Attorneys General Michael Mukasey, Alberto Gonzalez, and John Ashcroft; former FBI Directors, William Webster, Luis Freeh, and former Homeland Security Director Michael Chertoff, and Kenneth W. Star, who investigated President Clinton in the late 1990s and also served as U.S. Solicitor General.
