Bernie Sanders, Michelle Obama close out first night for Dems: Live analysis

Good evening all – I’m keeping an eye on the speeches under the racial justice section, which includes Gwen Carr, whose son Eric Garner was killed by police in 2014. But based on the programming the DNC has made public so far, it appears to be one of the only parts of the convention that will focus on the racial reckoning moment happening right now. I’ll also be closely watching Kristin Urquiza’s speech, whose father died of coronavirus in Arizona. I interviewed Urquiza a few weeks ago after her father’s obituary placed blame on Arizona’s governor for her father’s death and for endangering Latinos in the state by reopening. She told me that within 3 weeks of the state reopening and her dad telling her that the governor said it was safe for people without preexisting conditions, that he father got sick. “It was a living nightmare, with my father being in the hospital, my mother testing positive, me being in California and not really knowing what’s the best way for me to be helpful now,” Urquiza told me. And based on excerpts, she plans to say tonight: “My dad was a healthy 65-year-old. His only preexisting condition was trusting Donald Trump, and for that, he paid with his life.”
